We had the chance to ask Jessi Kavanagh a few questions abotu how she became a fitness model and what it means to be an NXTGirl. Read the full interview below:

MF: How did you become a bikini model?

JK: I have worked in the industry for the last 9 years and have always trained myself. As my Dad was a competitive Body Builder growing up, it was not unfamiliar to me. I first discovered the bikini category actually existed in 2011!

A client of mine at the time brought me a copy of oxygen magazine featuring Lyndsay Messina on the cover. I thought she looked amazing so I looked her up. I saw she was a competitive bikini athlete for the WBFF. I did some research and found Miami Pro in the UK and it went from there! At the time I had no “Fitness Friends” on Facebook and had no assistance from all the blogs and information that is easily available now. I went in totally blind! With some major help from my Dad we worked out a plan, booked the show and I have not looked back since!

MF: What are people’s reactions like when you tell them what you do?

JK: It normally takes a bit of explaining! If someone is not in the industry it all sounds pretty outrageous to them! When I break it down initially the majority of people will ask questions like “Wow, that’s a lot of sacrifice, is it worth it?” But once I explain why I do it, people generally think its pretty cool! Luckily I have an incredibly supportive boyfriend and family who totally understand what I do and what it takes.

How was your first time at BodyPower as an athlete with NXT Nutrition?

AMAZING! I had never been to the expo before, let alone working there It was such a brilliant experience working with the NXT Team, being part of the event and getting to know so many other like minded people. NXT are such an amazing company to work for. There was lots of hard work, lots of big smiles and lots of fun. I feel incredibly lucky to be a Sponsored Athlete with such a professional brand and to be part of #NXTGIRLS. I’m looking forward to next year already!

When were you last on stage and how did it go?

My last compeititon was in April 2013 at the Miami Pro World Championships. I placed 4th so I was pretty happy with that! Every show and prep is a learning curve and I did things a little differently for that competition. I did get a few things right and a few things wrong but I know for next time! I am currently preparing for 3 shows, RIBBF, NABBA and The RIBBF Fitness Extravaganza in September and October 2014 here in Ireland! Working hard and very excited!
