FASTED TRAINING AND THE ROLE OF BCAAs:

WHAT THE SCIENCE SAYS BCAAs are not metabolised in the liver. They compete for absorption with tryptophan for uptake across the blood-brain barrier. If you increase the ratio of BCAAs to tryptophan in the blood stream this will lead to a decrease in the amount of serotonin synthesised which, studies suggest, may reduce fatigue during exercise. Further research of BCAAs show that intake prior to fasted training increases phosphorylation of p70s6k, which is a signalling pathway, including mTOR, that increases protein synthesis. Therefore consuming a BCAA powder when training fasted allows you to take advantage of the fatigue reducing effects of BCAAs meaning you can continue to perform at maximum capacity.
